Ninpo, also known as Ninjutsu, is a traditional Japanese martial art that originated in feudal Japan. It is characterized by its use of stealth, deception, and unconventional tactics, rather than brute force. The term "ninpo" is derived from "ninja," which refers to the members of the ninja clans, and "po," which means "way" or "method." Ninpo encompasses a wide range of techniques, including espionage, sabotage, and combat, and is often associated with the legendary ninja warriors of Japan.

The history of ninpo can be traced back to the 16th century, during the Sengoku period, when the ninja clans emerged as a response to the political instability and constant warfare. These clans were often hired by daimyo (feudal lords) to carry out covert operations, such as spying, assassination, and sabotage. Over time, ninpo evolved and diversified, incorporating elements from various martial arts, such as jujutsu (traditional Japanese wrestling) and kenjutsu (swordsmanship).

Ninpo techniques are designed to be effective in close-quarters combat, often involving the use of weapons such as the shuriken (throwing star) and the kusarigama (chain sickle). However, ninpo also places a strong emphasis on stealth and deception, with techniques such as shadow play and mimicry used to evade detection. Despite its historical significance, ninpo has largely faded from mainstream practice in modern times. However, there are still practitioners and enthusiasts who study and preserve the art, often through dojo (training halls) and traditional martial arts schools.
