Neulanäytteenotto, known in English as needle biopsy or needle aspiration, is a medical procedure used to obtain a tissue or fluid sample from a suspicious area within the body for diagnostic purposes. This minimally invasive technique involves inserting a hollow needle through the skin and into the target tissue. The needle is then used to extract a small amount of cells or fluid. The type of needle used can vary depending on the size and nature of the area being sampled and whether a solid tissue sample or cellular fluid is required.

There are several types of needle biopsies. Fine-needle aspiration (FNA) uses a thin, hollow needle to withdraw cells from a lump or mass. Core needle biopsy uses a larger, hollow needle to obtain a small cylinder of tissue. Image-guided needle biopsies, such as ultrasound-guided or CT-guided, utilize imaging technologies to precisely locate the target area and guide the needle, increasing accuracy and safety.

The samples obtained through needle aspiration are typically sent to a pathology laboratory where they are examined under a microscope by a pathologist. This examination helps determine if the cells are cancerous, benign, or indicative of infection or other conditions. Needle aspiration is commonly used to diagnose abnormalities in organs like the breast, thyroid, lymph nodes, and lungs, as well as to assess cysts and other superficial lumps. The procedure is generally well-tolerated, with minimal discomfort and a low risk of complications. Results can often be obtained relatively quickly, aiding in prompt diagnosis and treatment planning.
