Művészettudomány is the scholarly study of the visual arts and related cultural practices. In Hungarian, the term combines művészet (art) with tudomány (science or systematic knowledge). The field encompasses art history, art theory and aesthetics, criticism, museology, conservation science, and visual culture. It addresses artworks and their producers, audiences, and contexts across time and regions, using methods drawn from history, philosophy, anthropology, and the humanities.

Scholarly methods include formal analysis of style and technique, iconography and iconology, contextual interpretation within social and political contexts, provenance and archival research, and conservation or restoration science where material study is involved. The discipline often works in close relation to museums, galleries, libraries, and archives, as well as digital humanities and theoretical frameworks that examine representation, materiality, and reception.

Historically, the field emerged in Europe in the 18th–19th centuries and diversified into specialized subfields. In Hungary and other countries, it has been established through universities, research institutes, and cultural institutions, fostering education in art history, museology, and conservation.

Subfields commonly include art history, aesthetics, visual culture studies, conservation science, museology and curatorial studies, architectural history, and digital art history. Professionals work as researchers, curators, conservators, educators, and policy advisers in museums, galleries, universities, and cultural organizations.
