It encompasses industrial design, graphic design, textiles, ceramics, and digital and service design.

Historically, muotoilu emerged in Finland during the early 20th century with modernist influences and a strong craft tradition. After World War II, the field combined industrial production with skilled making, developing a distinctive approach that emphasizes usability, simplicity and materials. Finnish designers gained international recognition through figures such as Alvar Aalto, Kaj Franck, Tapio Wirkkala and Ilmari Tapiovaara, whose work spans furniture, glassware and everyday objects. Iconic products include Aalto’s Savoy vase and furniture, Franck’s functional cutlery and glass, and Wirkkala’s experimental form-making.
