Muokkausnäppäimet, also known as modifier keys in English, are special keys on a computer keyboard that, when pressed in conjunction with other keys, alter the function of those other keys. They do not typically produce any characters or output on their own. The most common muokkausnäppäimet are Shift, Ctrl (Control), and Alt (Alternate).

The Shift key is primarily used to type uppercase letters when held down and a letter key is pressed. It also accesses the secondary symbols printed on some keys, such as the exclamation mark above the '1' key or the ampersand above the '7' key. The Ctrl key is used in combination with other keys to execute commands or shortcuts within software applications. For example, Ctrl+C is a common shortcut for copying selected text. The Alt key, often used in conjunction with Ctrl (as AltGr on some European keyboards), also modifies key functions and is used for special characters or application-specific commands.

Other less common modifier keys include the Super key (often represented by the Windows logo or Apple logo on respective keyboards), which typically opens the Start menu or Mission Control, and the Function (Fn) key, found on many laptops, which allows access to secondary functions printed on other keys, such as adjusting screen brightness or volume.
