Munherpes is not a medically recognized disease or pathogen. The term appears only sporadically in online discussions and in fictional or speculative contexts, and there is no consensus definition in medical literature. When used, it may be described as a herpes-related condition that primarily involves mucous membranes, but such usage is nonstandard and not validated by clinical studies.

In established medicine, herpes simplex virus types 1 and 2 (HSV-1 and HSV-2) cause mucocutaneous infections that can affect the oral and genital mucosa. Typical symptoms include painful vesicles or ulcers on the lips, mouth, genitals, or surrounding skin, often accompanied by fever, malaise, and swollen lymph nodes. Primary infections can be more severe; recurrences are common and may be triggered by stress, illness, or sun exposure. Transmission occurs by direct contact with affected secretions or vesicles, and can occur even without visible lesions.

Diagnosis is usually clinical but may be confirmed by PCR, viral culture, or antigen detection from a lesion. Serology can indicate prior exposure. Treatments include antiviral medications such as acyclovir, valacyclovir, or famciclovir, which speed healing and reduce symptoms and transmission risk. There is no cure; management also includes symptom relief and counseling on prevention.

Prevention emphasizes avoidance of contact during outbreaks, safe-sex practices where appropriate, and, in some cases, prophylactic antiviral therapy for recurrent infections.
