Multivending is a vending industry approach in which a single vending unit or system distributes multiple product categories or supports items from multiple suppliers. In practice, multivending machines may feature modular, compartmentalized carts that can be stocked with snacks, beverages, personal care items, or fresh foods, and may operate as a platform for multiple brands or vendors within a single device or network.

Modern multivending typically uses electronic controllers, sensors, item-level inventory tracking, and remote monitoring. Each compartment has a dedicated payment and dispensing pathway. Payment methods include cashless systems, contactless cards, mobile wallets, and sometimes cash accepted. Software manages inventory, sales data, and vendor commissions, and can route customers to digital interfaces for selections.

Two common models: (a) a single operator operates a multi-vendor catalog within one machine, stocking products from different brands and sharing revenue; (b) a true multi-vendor network where independent vendors supply items to a shared machine across locations through backend provisioning.

Benefits include increased product variety at a single location, higher revenue per site, and flexible procurement. Challenges include more complex stocking, shelf life management, maintenance, higher upfront cost, and cybersecurity/privacy concerns in connected devices.

Applications are in workplaces, transit centers, universities, hospitals, and retail kiosks. As IoT, AI demand forecasting, and payment ecosystems mature, multivending platforms aim to optimize assortment, reduce spoilage, and enable micro-marketplaces.
