Mulchmaterialet refers to any material spread on the soil surface to create a protective layer that supports plant health and soil quality. Mulch helps conserve soil moisture, suppress weeds, moderate soil temperature, reduce erosion, and improve soil structure as organic mulches decompose. It is commonly used around trees, shrubs, flower beds, and vegetable gardens.

Mulch materials fall into two broad categories: organic and inorganic. Organic mulches include wood chips, bark, straw, hay, shredded leaves, compost, and other plant residues. Inorganic options include plastic films, landscape fabrics, gravel, crushed stone, lava rock, and rubber. Some products are dyed for aesthetics; color can influence heat absorption and soil temperature.

Application guidelines vary by material and plant type. A general rule is a layer of about 2–5 cm (1–2 inches) for finer materials and 5–10 cm (2–4 inches) for coarser ones, applied away from stems to prevent rot. In vegetable beds, start with a lighter layer to allow seed germination and then deepen the mulch around established plants. Avoid piling mulch directly against trunks of trees.

Maintenance and considerations. Organic mulch should be replenished as it decomposes and settles, typically every 1–3 years. Be mindful of potential nitrogen immobilization when fresh wood-based mulches are used. Choose clean, locally sourced materials to minimize contamination and weed seeds. Synthetic mulches reduce soil organic matter but can control surface conditions; organic mulches enhance soil health over time.
