Safety is a central concern in mountaineering, which carries significant hazards such as weather changes, avalanches, rockfall, crevasses, and altitude sickness. Risk is mitigated through planning, training, partner systems, and, in many regions, organized rescue services.

History and notable figures: Early ascents like the Matterhorn in 1865, led by Edward Whymper, helped establish modern mountaineering. In the Himalayas, the first ascent of Everest in 1953 was achieved by Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay. In the late 20th century, climbers such as Reinhold Messner advanced high-altitude achievement. Modern mountaineering encompasses both commercial expeditions and independent climbs.
