Whymper
Whymper is a surname. It is most associated with Edward Whymper (1840–1911), a British-born mountaineer who settled in Italy and became renowned for leading the first ascent of the Matterhorn in 1865. The climb was a historic achievement, but it ended in tragedy during the descent with the deaths of several climbers. Whymper also wrote about his Alpine experiences, contributing to late 19th-century mountaineering literature.
