Motorityyppejä refers to the different types of motors used to convert electrical energy into mechanical energy. These classifications are based on their operating principles, construction, and applications. The two broadest categories are direct current (DC) motors and alternating current (AC) motors.

DC motors are powered by direct current and are known for their precise speed control and high starting torque. Common types include brushed DC motors, which use brushes and a commutator to switch current direction, and brushless DC motors (BLDC), which use electronic commutation and are generally more efficient and durable.

AC motors operate on alternating current and are widely used due to their reliability and simplicity. The most prevalent types are induction motors, also known as asynchronous motors. These motors rely on electromagnetic induction to create torque. Synchronous motors are another significant category of AC motors, where the rotor rotates at the same speed as the magnetic field of the stator.

Beyond these fundamental divisions, there are specialized motor types designed for specific tasks. Stepper motors provide precise positioning and are often used in robotics and automation. Servo motors offer highly accurate control over speed and position, making them essential in applications requiring dynamic performance. The choice of motor type depends heavily on the requirements of the application, such as power needs, speed control, torque, efficiency, and cost.
