Mooding is a term used in online communities to describe the practice of presenting or tagging content to convey a particular emotional state or mood. The word blends mood with the -ing form and does not have a fixed scholarly definition, instead circulating as internet slang in social media, art forums, and blogging spaces.

Practices commonly grouped under mooding include: selecting or editing media to match a chosen mood (for example, adjusting color grading, lighting, or soundtrack to evoke warmth or melancholy); adding mood descriptors or hashtags to posts (such as #mood:joyful or #mood:somber); and composing captions that signal an intended emotional tone. These activities are often used to cultivate a cohesive aesthetic, signal personal state to followers, or participate in community norms around emotional expression.

Critically, mooding is subjective and context-dependent; different audiences may interpret the same post differently, and there is no standardized measure of mood. It can enhance clarity of emotional intent in digital communication but may also obscure nuance or lead to over-simplified impressions of a creator’s state.
