Mockingbirds are medium-sized songbirds in the family Mimidae, known for their vocal mimicry. The best-known member is the Northern mockingbird (Mimus polyglottos), but several other American species are commonly called mockingbirds, including tropical mockingbirds (Mimus gilvus). They range from the southern United States through Central and South America, occupying open areas with shrubs, woodland edges, and human-modified habitats such as gardens and suburbs.

Description: Mockingbirds have gray upperparts, paler underparts, and long tails. They measure about 22–28 cm in length. Both sexes look similar, with variation across species.

Vocal behavior: They are famous for large repertoires and mimicry of other birds, insects, and occasional non-biotic sounds. Their songs are loud and varied, often given from perches at dawn and during breeding. Mimicry helps defend territory and attract mates.

Diet and foraging: They are omnivorous, feeding on insects, spiders, small vertebrates, and fruit. They forage on the ground or in low vegetation, often catching prey with quick bill snaps.

Reproduction: Nests are built in shrubs or trees, typically several meters above ground. Clutch size is usually 3–5 eggs; incubation lasts about 11–14 days, mainly by the female, with the male helping to feed nestlings. Nestlings fledge about 12–16 days after hatching.

Conservation: Mockingbirds are generally adaptable and widespread; most species are classified as Least Concern by the IUCN, though local declines occur where habitat is threatened.
