Mobilelocation refers to the determination and sharing of a mobile device's geographic position. It encompasses techniques and technologies used to obtain, compute, and convey location data for devices such as smartphones, tablets, and connected wearables. Location data supports a variety of services, including navigation, mapping, emergency communications, and context-aware applications.

Geolocation is typically achieved through a combination of satellite navigation, cellular networks, and wireless access points. Global Positioning System provides satellite-based coordinates, often aided by Assisted GPS to speed up fixes in urban areas. In areas with limited satellite visibility, cell-tower triangulation and Wi-Fi positioning estimate position using known network topologies and previously mapped locations. Some systems also integrate inertial sensors and Bluetooth beacons for improved accuracy or dead reckoning indoors.

Accuracy varies by method. GPS can provide accuracy within a few meters under open sky, while cell-based methods can range from tens to hundreds of meters. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth methods typically achieve tens of meters indoors. Real-time location services may intermittently update to conserve battery life and data usage.

On devices, location access is controlled by user permissions and platform policies. Operating systems and apps request explicit consent to collect or share location data, and users can adjust privacy settings or revoke permissions. Regulations such as the European Union's General Data Protection Regulation and other privacy laws govern collection, storage, and sharing of location data.

Common applications include navigation and ride-hailing, search and discovery of nearby services, geofencing, asset tracking, and analytics. Emergency services can request location data to improve response times, as in enhanced 911 services in the United States.

Challenges include privacy concerns, battery consumption, indoor accuracy, and data security. Ongoing advances in sensor fusion and mapping databases continue to improve reliability and coverage of mobile location services.
