Minimalistisch describes a design and art approach that seeks clarity by reducing form, color, and ornamentation to essentials. It aims to reveal function, materiality, and space rather than decorative effects.

Historically, minimalism grew from early modernist movements such as De Stijl and Bauhaus and became a distinct mode in the visual arts, architecture, and design during the 1960s and 1970s. In Dutch- and German-speaking contexts the term is commonly used to describe a broad tendency toward restraint across disciplines.

Key characteristics include geometric or elemental forms, a restrained color palette (often neutral), clean lines, repetition or modularity, and the deliberate use of negative space. Materials are frequently honest and industrial, such as steel, concrete, glass, or unfinished wood.

Applications span architecture, interior and product design, graphic design, fashion, and digital interfaces. The emphasis is on function, proportion, and rhythm, with superfluous features removed to achieve timeless, versatile results.

Reception is mixed. Proponents praise clarity, efficiency, and calm; critics argue that extreme restraint can feel cold or elitist and may obscure human scale or meaning. Successful minimalism balances restraint with warmth, context, and tactility.

Notable figures and influences include the minimalist artists Donald Judd, Dan Flavin, and Carl Andre; architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe; designer Dieter Rams; and minimal music by Steve Reich and Philip Glass.
