They emphasize high-density storage and automation, using technologies such as automated storage and retrieval systems, robotic pickers, conveyors, and sortation equipment, typically operated by a lean human workforce to handle exceptions and packing.

They process stock for online orders and enable services such as same-day or next-day delivery, micro-distribution, and buy-online-pickup-in-store workflows. Operations are integrated with enterprise software including order management systems, warehouse management systems, and transportation management systems to coordinate receiving, replenishment, picking, packing, and outbound routing.
