Mikrofiberid is a term used in textile technology to refer to a set of methods and tools for identifying, characterizing, and tracing microfiber materials. Although not universally standardized, the concept is applied to fibers with micrometer-scale diameters—microfibers used in clothing, cleaning products, filtration, and technical textiles. Mikrofiberid covers material identification, such as determining polymer type and blend composition, as well as provenance and quality control within manufacturing and recycling workflows.

Methods commonly associated with mikrofiberid include both non-destructive and destructive analyses. Optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy reveal fiber morphology and cross-section features. Spectroscopic techniques, particularly infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and Raman spectroscopy, aid in polymer identification. Thermal analysis methods like differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) provide data on thermal properties and composition. Non-destructive approaches such as near-infrared spectroscopy (NIR) and, when possible, X-ray techniques are also used. In some workflows, dye profiling and specialized chromatography can support colorant and additive identification. Reference databases and calibration procedures are important to interpret results reliably.

Applications of mikrofiberid span quality control, supply-chain traceability, recycling and material separation, counterfeit detection, and research into microfiber behavior and performance. The approach helps verify product specifications, ensure material compatibility in blends, and support accurate labeling and end-of-life processing.

Limitations include the complexity of mixed or multilayer materials, contamination, and overlapping spectral features between similar polymers. Small sample sizes, cost, and the need for robust reference libraries can also constrain effectiveness.
