Microplasticity refers to plastic deformation phenomena that occur at micro- to sub-micrometer length scales within materials, in contrast to bulk, or macro, plasticity. It describes the onset of irreversible deformation in small volumes and the highly localized, discrete activity of defects such as dislocations that accommodate strain. In crystalline solids, microplasticity is often governed by dislocation nucleation, motion, and interaction with obstacles, as well as the influence of surfaces and interfaces that become more prominent at small scales.

A defining feature of microplasticity is a size-dependent change in mechanical response. As specimen dimensions decrease, the yield and flow stresses often increase, a phenomenon known as the size effect. Plastic deformation at the microscale tends to be intermittent, with strain bursts or jerky flow resulting from discrete dislocation events rather than smooth, continuous plastic flow. The microstructure, including grain size, crystallographic orientation, and the nature of interfaces, strongly influences these behaviors. While dislocation-mediated mechanisms dominate in metals, other materials such as polymers and ceramics may exhibit different microscopic mechanisms for accommodating strain.

Experimental study of microplasticity employs techniques such as nanoindentation, microcompression, and microtension, frequently combined with in-situ imaging in electron or scanning probe microscopes to observe dislocation activity and surface interactions. Computational models, including dislocation dynamics and crystal plasticity finite element methods, aim to reproduce size effects and the stochastic nature of microplastic events.

Understanding microplasticity informs the design and reliability of micro- and nano-scale devices and advanced materials, where accurate prediction of mechanical response at small scales is essential.
