Mikroelektronik refers to the field of electronics that deals with the miniaturization of electronic components and circuits. It is a foundational technology that enables the development of modern electronic devices, from smartphones and computers to medical equipment and automotive systems. The core of microelectronics lies in the fabrication of integrated circuits, often referred to as microchips or simply chips. These circuits are built on semiconductor materials, most commonly silicon, and contain millions or even billions of transistors, resistors, capacitors, and other electronic elements etched onto a small piece of material.

The process of creating microelectronic devices involves several sophisticated steps, including photolithography, etching, doping, and deposition. Photolithography uses light to transfer circuit patterns onto a silicon wafer. Etching selectively removes material to create the desired structures. Doping introduces impurities into the semiconductor to alter its electrical properties, forming the basis of transistors. Deposition adds thin layers of various materials. The continuous drive to miniaturize these components, following Moore's Law which predicted a doubling of transistors on a chip every two years, has led to significant increases in processing power, reduced energy consumption, and lower costs for electronic devices. Microelectronics research and development continues to push the boundaries of what is possible, exploring new materials, advanced packaging techniques, and novel device architectures.
