Members of a metsästysseura usually hold a share or fee on the land and assume responsibility for maintaining the terrain, monitoring wildlife populations and ensuring that hunting practices adhere to conservation objectives. The clubs often conduct training sessions for new hunters, organise communal shooting days (turvalaakunta), and may offer support for wildlife research, such as data collection on deer or bear numbers. In many rural areas, the clubs serve also as social hubs, organising holiday events, sporting competitions, and community gatherings.

Regulation of hunting clubs is enforced by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry through regional hunting authorities. Clubs need to submit annual reports detailing hunting outcomes, changes in land use and any conservation projects undertaken. Non‑compliance with environmental laws, such as the protection of endangered species or the protection of protected areas, can result in fines or revocation of the hunting licence.
