Metatransparency is the practice of making explicit the processes and criteria through which transparency itself is produced and assessed. It is transparency about transparency, focusing on the methods, governance, and assumptions that determine what information is disclosed, how it is gathered, and how it is evaluated.

In practice, metatransparency includes documenting data provenance and collection methods, the design and validation of transparency tools (such as model documentation, data sheets, or audit frameworks), and the governance structures that decide what to disclose and how disclosures are managed. It also covers the criteria used to determine disclosure scope, the timing and frequency of updates, and the processes for validating and auditing signals of transparency.

In artificial intelligence, metatransparency can encompass disclosures about training data characteristics, model limitations, evaluation protocols, uncertainty quantification, and bias mitigation routines, as well as the organizational policies that oversee disclosures. It may also involve exposing the reasoning behind disclosure choices, the metrics used to assess transparency, and the steps taken to protect privacy and security while remaining open.

Benefits of metatransparency include enhanced accountability, improved comparability across organizations, and stronger trust among users and stakeholders. It supports auditability and reproducibility by revealing not only what is disclosed, but how and why those disclosures were selected and validated.

Challenges include balancing openness with privacy, security, or competitive concerns; avoiding superficial or misleading claims; and achieving standardized, interoperable practices across domains.
