Messaters thrive in coastal and estuarine environments, including brackish waters, but some species, like the inland silverside, inhabit freshwater lakes and rivers. They are highly adaptable and can be found in a variety of habitats, including ponds, marshes, and slow-moving streams. Their diet primarily consists of zooplankton, small crustaceans, and insect larvae, making them important prey for larger fish, birds, and mammals.

They are also economically valuable, as they are commonly targeted by recreational anglers and are sometimes used as baitfish. Messaters are not typically kept in home aquariums due to their small size and specific environmental requirements, but they are occasionally studied in laboratory settings for ecological research.

Conservation status varies among species, with some populations facing threats from habitat degradation, pollution, and overfishing. However, many messaters remain abundant and are not currently listed as endangered. Their resilience and adaptability contribute to their persistence in changing environments.
