Mesoteliopatiaa is a term used to describe diseases affecting the mesothelium, which is a thin membrane lining the body cavities and covering internal organs. The most common and well-known mesoteliopatia is malignant mesothelioma, a rare but aggressive cancer that arises from the mesothelial cells. This cancer most frequently affects the pleura, the lining of the lungs, but can also occur in the peritoneum, the lining of the abdomen, or the pericardium, the lining of the heart.

The primary cause of malignant mesothelioma is exposure to asbestos fibers. When inhaled or ingested, these fibers can become lodged in the mesothelium, leading to chronic inflammation and genetic mutations that promote cancer development. The latency period between asbestos exposure and the onset of mesothelioma can be very long, often 30 to 50 years or more. Other, less common causes or contributing factors may include exposure to certain zeolites and SV40 virus.

Symptoms of mesoteliopatiaa vary depending on the location of the affected mesothelium. Pleural mesothelioma often presents with shortness of breath, chest pain, a persistent cough, and unexplained weight loss. Peritoneal mesothelioma can cause abdominal pain, swelling, and changes in bowel habits. Diagnosis typically involves imaging techniques such as CT scans and MRIs, followed by a biopsy to confirm the presence of malignant mesothelial cells. Treatment options depend on the stage of the disease and may include surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, or a combination of these approaches. Research into new therapies and a better understanding of the disease are ongoing.
