Mephitis is a genus of skunks belonging to the family Mephitidae. These mammals are native to the Americas and are well-known for their potent defensive spray. The genus Mephitis currently includes two recognized species: the striped skunk, Mephitis mephitis, and the hooded skunk, Mephitis macroura. Both species share similar physical characteristics, including their distinctive black and white markings, which serve as a warning to potential predators.

Striped skunks are widespread across North America, inhabiting a variety of environments from forests to grasslands and even suburban areas. They are omnivorous, feeding on insects, small rodents, fruits, and eggs. Hooded skunks are found in more arid regions of the southwestern United States and Mexico. They are also omnivorous but tend to favor insects and plant matter.

The most notable characteristic of Mephitis skunks is their ability to produce and spray a foul-smelling liquid from glands near their anus. This musk is a powerful deterrent, effectively warding off predators. Before spraying, skunks often exhibit warning behaviors, such as stamping their feet, raising their tail, and hissing. The spray is not harmful but is extremely unpleasant and difficult to remove. Skunks are generally nocturnal and solitary animals, emerging from their dens at dusk to forage. They typically build their dens in hollow logs, abandoned burrows, or under structures. Their reproductive cycle is seasonal, with kits born in the spring.
