Melanotis is a genus of birds in the family Mimidae. The genus currently contains only one recognized species, Melanotis caerulescens, commonly known as the blue mockingbird. This species is found in Mexico and Central America, inhabiting a variety of habitats including forests, woodlands, and shrublands.

The blue mockingbird is a medium-sized bird, typically measuring around 25 to 28 centimeters in length. Its plumage is predominantly a deep, slate-blue color, with darker wings and tail. A distinctive feature is its dark mask around the eyes, which contrasts with its lighter throat and belly. Both males and females exhibit similar coloration, although males may be slightly larger.

The diet of Melanotis caerulescens consists mainly of insects, spiders, and fruits. They are often observed foraging on the ground or in low vegetation. Their song is complex and varied, similar to other members of the Mimidae family, which includes mockingbirds and thrashers. They are known to mimic the songs of other bird species.

The breeding behavior of the blue mockingbird involves the construction of cup-shaped nests, usually in dense shrubs or trees. Both parents participate in incubation and feeding the young. The species is generally considered resident in its range, though some local movements may occur. Melanotis caerulescens is not currently considered endangered, but its populations can be affected by habitat loss and degradation.
