Mechanizing, or mechanising (British English), refers to the process of replacing manual labor with machines to perform work that was previously done by hand or with animal power. It involves introducing powered tools, machines, and equipment that can perform tasks more quickly or with greater consistency, often reducing labor intensity while enabling higher output.

Historically, mechanization arose during the Industrial Revolution with innovations such as water and steam power, machine tools, and powered weaving. It is distinct from automation, which emphasizes systems that control and regulate processes often with minimal human input. Mechanization may still require human operators or supervision, whereas automation aims to reduce human intervention to the point of self-guiding operation.

Examples across sectors: Agriculture—tractors, seed drills, threshers; Manufacturing—machine tools, power looms, stamping presses; Transportation and construction—steam shovels, cranes, excavators; Printing—steam-powered presses. In manufacturing, mechanization often precedes full automation, enabling higher throughput and standardization before replacing routine control with automatic systems.

Impacts include higher productivity, standardized outputs, and changes in labor demand and skills. Adoption depends on capital costs, reliability, maintenance requirements, infrastructure, and access to energy or fuel. Mechanization can also affect safety, energy use, and environmental footprints, sometimes increasing emissions if powered by fossil fuels, but offering efficiency gains when effectively integrated.

In modern economies, mechanization remains foundational even as automation and robotics advance, with ongoing transitions in agriculture, manufacturing, logistics, and service processes. Measurement of mechanization's impact typically considers output per worker, labor productivity, energy intensity, and total factor productivity.
