Matriisitekijällä is a term originating from Finnish mathematics education. It refers to a method of factoring polynomials, particularly quadratic expressions, by introducing a placeholder term. This technique is often employed when the leading coefficient of the quadratic is not 1, making direct factoring more challenging.

The process typically involves multiplying the entire quadratic expression by the leading coefficient. Then, the expression is rearranged into a new quadratic form where the leading coefficient is 1. This new quadratic can then be factored more easily using standard methods. After factoring, the placeholder term is divided out by factoring the leading coefficient from one or both of the binomial factors.

For example, to factor $2x^2 + 7x + 3$, one might multiply by 2 to get $4x^2 + 14x + 6$. This can be rewritten as $(2x)^2 + 7(2x) + 6$. Letting $y = 2x$, the expression becomes $y^2 + 7y + 6$, which factors into $(y+1)(y+6)$. Substituting back $y=2x$, we get $(2x+1)(2x+6)$. Finally, factoring out the 2 from the second binomial gives $(2x+1)2(x+3)$, or $2(2x+1)(x+3)$. A common mistake is forgetting to divide out the leading coefficient at the end.
