Matra is a term that has several distinct meanings across different fields and regions. In geography and linguistics, it can denote very different concepts, while in industry it refers to a historic French defense and aerospace group.

Mátra refers to a mountain range in northern Hungary. The Mátra Mountains lie mainly in Heves and Nógrád counties and contain Hungary’s highest peak, Kékes, which reaches about 1,014 meters. The range is a popular area for hiking and winter sports and includes several towns and villages that serve as access points for outdoor activities.

Matra also refers to a major French defense and aerospace company that played a significant role in mid- to late-20th century technology development. Founded in the postwar era, Matra expanded into aerospace, missiles, electronics, and space hardware. In 1999 it merged with Aérospatiale to form Aérospatiale-Matra, a step in the consolidation of Europe’s aerospace industry that ultimately contributed to the formation of the EADS group (now Airbus Group). The Matra name was gradually absorbed as the company’s assets were integrated into larger corporate structures, though it remains part of historical references to European defense manufacturing.

In linguistics and scriptology, matra (often transliterated mātrā) denotes a unit related to syllable duration or metrical weight in Indian prosody. In writing systems such as Devanagari and other Indic scripts, matras are diacritic marks attached to consonants to indicate the accompanying vowel sound; they encode vowel quality and length and are essential to the orthography of many languages of South Asia.
