The name massilaengu is constructed from elements of the imagined language of the archipelago, with massi- commonly interpreted as “sea” and laengu as “gathering” or “song,” according to in-world linguists.

Traditionally performed during solstices, harvests, and maritime rites, massilaengu features extended singing cycles led by a primary vocalist, supported by a chorus and a rotating ensemble of percussionists.
