Massilan
Massilan is a historical term associated with Massilia, the ancient Greek colony located at the site of present-day Marseille in southern Gaul (Provence). The form Massilanin or Massilan can appear as an older or less common variant of the Latin demonym Massiliānus, Massillensis, or the English Massilians. In most English-language sources, the inhabitants are more commonly referred to as Massilians or Massilienses; Massilan appears primarily in Latin or specialized discussions of ancient ethnonyms.
Massilia (Massilia in Latin; Massilia in Greek) was founded by Phocaean Greeks around the 6th century BCE
In the late Republic, Massilia aligned with Pompey during Julius Caesar’s civil war. Caesar’s forces laid siege
Today, Massilia is the Latin and historical name for the city of Marseille. The ethnonym Massilan survives
