It refers to analytical and design methods that base conclusions on the conservation of mass within a defined system. In these approaches, the total mass of substances of interest is tracked as it flows into, through, and out of a system, allowing for estimation of loads, storage, and transformations.

The core principle is the mass balance equation: inputs plus generation equal outputs plus accumulation minus consumption. In a steady state, accumulation is negligible, so inputs approximate outputs for each substance. In dynamic analysis, changes in storage are explicitly included.

Applications include wastewater treatment and urban water management, where pollutant loads such as COD, nitrogen, and phosphorus are quantified; nutrient management in agriculture to control runoff; air and soil remediation projects; and industrial process design and optimization. Mass loading rates, often expressed as kilograms per day or per unit area, are common metrics.

Advantages include transparency, consistency across scales, and compatibility with optimization and scenario analysis. Limitations include the need for accurate boundary definitions and data, handling of storage and complex reactions, and the potential propagation of data uncertainty.
