The hook mechanism below the fabric then catches the loop of the upper thread and interlaces it with the lower thread, creating a stitch. The most common type of stitch is the lockstitch.

Modern sewing machines offer a wide variety of stitches beyond the basic straight stitch, including zigzag stitches, buttonhole stitches, and decorative stitches. They can also be used for various sewing tasks such as hemming, quilting, embroidery, and even tailoring. The development of the sewing machine in the 19th century revolutionized the textile industry and domestic sewing, making garment production more efficient and accessible.
