Marsiya is a form of elegiac poetry in Urdu, Persian, and other South Asian languages, devoted to commemorating the martyrdom of Husayn ibn Ali and the events of Karbala during the Muharram month. The term marsiya, from Persian, denotes an elegy or lament. Traditionally, a marsiya is a lengthy sequence of rhymed couplets or stanzas that narrate the tragedy at Karbala, describe the suffering of Husayn and his companions, and reflect on themes of sacrifice, loyalty, and justice.
