In surveying and civil engineering, marksetning, often referred to as setting out or stakeout, is the process of transferring coordinates from a design to the field. Surveyors use plans, coordinate systems, and reference points to determine exact locations for structures, trenches, roads, and utilities. Tools commonly involved include total stations, theodolites, GPS devices, measuring tapes, stakes, and durable markers or spray paint. The workflow typically involves calculating stake points, placing markers, verifying placements through cross-checks, and recording all measurements in field books or digital systems.

In construction, marksetning ensures that foundations, walls, and other elements are laid out in the correct positions and orientations. Site supervisors or surveyors perform or supervise the marking work to align construction activities with the approved design, coordinating with engineers and architects. Temporary markers are often used during the building phase, with markers reinforced or removed as work progresses.

In forestry, marksetning refers to marking trees for harvest, protection, or management according to a forest plan. Marking is performed by trained personnel, using color codes, tags, or paint to indicate treatment decisions for individual trees or stands.
