A mahout is a person who works with and cares for elephants, typically focusing on Asian elephants. The word is widely believed to derive from the Hindi-Urdu term for elephant handler, reflecting the long historical role of mahouts in elephant care, transportation, and ceremonial duties across South and Southeast Asia.

Historically, mahouts trained and managed elephants from a young age, forming strong bonds with individual animals that could last many years. They guided elephants using voice, body signals, and, in some traditions, tools such as ankus (a bullhook) or goad. The mahout’s expertise includes daily care, feeding, bathing, health observation, and guiding elephants in logging, transport, religious processions, and tourism activities. A mahout commonly works with a single elephant, though some families maintain multi-generational or long-term arrangements.

Training and welfare practices have evolved, with increasing emphasis on humane methods and compliance with animal welfare standards. Traditional punitive tools have faced criticism, and many mahouts now employ positive reinforcement and enrichment alongside safety measures to reduce injury risk for both elephant and handler. In several countries, government programs, sanctuaries, and elephant camps promote conservation and responsible stewardship, sometimes offering training and support to mahouts to adapt to modern contexts.

Culturally, mahouts have played a prominent role in the symbolism and economy of regions where elephants are integral to religious rituals, festivals, and tourism. Today the number of traditional mahouts faces pressures from urbanization and mechanization, but the profession remains a recognizable element of regional heritage and ongoing elephant management efforts.
