Éclosion is the emergence of an organism from an enclosing structure, such as an egg, a chrysalis, or a flower bud. In everyday usage, it most often refers to hatching, the process by which an embryo breaks free from its eggshell or pupal case. The exact mechanism and timing vary widely across taxa.

In animals, hatching begins after the embryo has completed development and requires physical actions by the hatchling or, in some cases, enzymatic weakening or rupture of the protective covering. Birds, reptiles, and amphibians commonly hatch from eggs, while many insects emerge from pupal cases during metamorphosis. Hatching times depend on species and environmental factors such as temperature, humidity, oxygen levels, and access to food. Some species hatch in synchronized waves to match resource availability.

In plants and fungi, éclosion can also refer to the opening of a flower or a bud, marking the onset of pollination or the display of reproductive structures. The opening process is regulated by internal signals and external cues like light, temperature, and circadian rhythms. Note that in botany, the term germination more precisely describes the emergence of a seedling from a seed.

Ecologically, the timing of éclosion affects survival and reproduction, influencing predator avoidance, feeding opportunities, and pollinator interactions. In agriculture and pest management, understanding hatching patterns is important for controlling population outbreaks.
