The exact form of the starting position varies by task, but the underlying aim is a stable base, proper alignment, and readiness to produce force.

Key elements commonly considered in a good lähtöposition include stable alignment of the spine and neck in a neutral position, a solid base of support with feet positioned for the upcoming action, and appropriate joint angles that allow a smooth transition into movement. The center of gravity should be over the base of support, and muscles should be engaged to enable a controlled, powerful start. Coaching cues often emphasize maintaining a flat back, keeping the head aligned with the spine, relaxing unnecessary tension in the shoulders, and preparing the body to transfer energy efficiently into the first phase of the movement. The specific configuration is task-specific and may adjust with speed, power requirements, and technique.

Examples of sport-specific applications include sprint starts on the track, where athletes assume a crouched stance with appropriate alignment to maximize acceleration; swimming starts, where the body is positioned at the pool edge for an explosive dive; and weightlifting, where the lifter adopts a hip-dominant, neutral-spine stance with the bar held close to the body. In occupational and daily contexts, a safe lähtöposition for lifting involves a shoulder-width stance, hips back, spine neutral, core engaged, and the load held close to the body to reduce risk of injury.
