Lowtomidfire refers to a range of ceramic firing temperatures that fall between approximately 1000°C (1830°F) and 1250°C (2280°F). This temperature range is commonly used in pottery and ceramics for a variety of purposes, depending on the specific clay body and glaze formulation.

In this temperature range, clays undergo vitrification, a process where clay particles fuse together, becoming increasingly dense and non-porous. The degree of vitrification depends on the precise temperature and the duration of the firing. Firing at the lower end of the low to mid-fire range, around 1000-1100°C, typically results in a more porous and slightly less durable ceramic. This is often referred to as earthenware or low-fired stoneware.

As the temperature increases towards the upper end of the low to mid-fire range, around 1150-1250°C, the clay becomes more thoroughly vitrified. This leads to a denser, stronger, and less permeable ceramic, characteristic of mid-fired stoneware. These firings often achieve a good balance between durability and ease of firing, as they do not require the extremely high temperatures of high-fire stoneware or porcelain.

Glazes also mature within this temperature range. Low to mid-fire glazes are formulated to melt and form a glassy coating on the ceramic surface at these temperatures. The appearance of these glazes can vary significantly, from matte to glossy finishes, and they can exhibit a wide spectrum of colors. The firing temperature is crucial for achieving the desired glaze effects, such as opacity, color saturation, and surface texture.
