Low-lathering refers to the characteristic of cleaning products, such as shampoos, soaps, and detergents, that produce minimal or no foam when agitated with water. This lack of sudsing is often a deliberate formulation choice rather than an indicator of reduced cleaning efficacy.

Many factors can influence lather production. The type and concentration of surfactants, the primary cleaning agents, play a significant role. Some surfactants are inherently low-foaming, while others can be modified to reduce lather. The presence of certain ingredients, such as oils or silicones, can also suppress foam. Water hardness can affect lather; in hard water, soap can react with minerals to form soap scum, reducing lather.
