longiflorum

Longiflorum, scientifically Lilium longiflorum, is a species of flowering plant in the lily family Liliaceae. It is native to the Ryukyu Islands of Japan and has been widely cultivated for ornamental use. The form is best known for large, trumpet-shaped white flowers and is a traditional Easter flower in many cultures. In horticulture, it is sold as longiflorum lilies or Easter lilies, including numerous cultivars derived from the species.

Longiflorum is a bulbous perennial. Stems typically reach 60 to 120 cm in height, with slender, lance-shaped leaves arranged along the stem. The flowers are borne in clusters or on a raceme and are usually pure white with a strong fragrance; the anthers are orange-brown. While the classic form is white, some cultivars show pink tinting or other subtle color variation, particularly in cut-flower selections.

Cultivation and care emphasize well-drained soil and good light. Longiflorum prefers full sun to partial shade and a cold dormant period. Plant bulbs about 10 to 15 cm deep and 15 to 20 cm apart, with the neck just below the soil surface. In temperate regions, they require a winter chill to bloom reliably. They are popular as garden ornamentals, and are widely used as cut flowers for arrangements and for Easter displays. Many growers also produce potted plants for forced blooming indoors in late winter.

Pests and diseases commonly associated with longiflorum include lily beetles, aphids, botrytis blight, and basal rot in poorly drained soils. Tall stems may need staking to prevent flopping. After flowering, allow foliage to photosynthesize to replenish the bulb for next season.
