Lokalkännedom, or knowledge of a local area, refers to the understanding of a specific locality that includes its geographical layout, transportation networks, services, and institutions, as well as social norms, networks and history. It enables efficient navigation, decision making, and interaction within a place. Much of lokalkännedom is tacit, built through daily experience and repeated exposure to a locality.

The concept encompasses several components. Spatial knowledge covers streets, neighborhoods, landmarks, and typical routes. Functional knowledge includes awareness of schools, healthcare, shops, public services, and administrative procedures. Social and cultural knowledge involves local languages, codes of conduct, key actors, and community dynamics. Historical knowledge relates to how the locality has evolved, including past events and trends that shape current conditions. Lokalkännedom thus differs from more generalized regional knowledge by its focus on a specific place and its everyday functioning.

Development and sources usually involve residence, regular commuting, work in the area, and interaction with residents and institutions. It can be explicit, such as consulting maps or guides, or tacit, arising from observation and immersion. In some professions, local knowledge is formalized or tested as part of training or performance assessments.

Applications include urban planning and design, emergency and public safety response, tourism, journalism, real estate, and local politics. Benefits include faster problem solving, better navigation, and stronger community engagement. Limitations and concerns include bias and outdated information in a rapidly changing area, potential exclusion of outsiders, and privacy considerations when sensitive local knowledge is shared or exploited.
