In English-speaking contexts, the field is frequently referred to as speech-language pathology, and credentials such as the CCC-SLP may be issued by professional associations in the United States.

Work settings include schools, hospitals, clinics, rehabilitation centers, and private practice. Typical activities involve diagnostic assessment using standardized tests, development of individualized therapy plans, progress monitoring, and collaboration with teachers, physicians, and other therapists. Interventions are guided by evidence-based practice, and technology—including computer-based therapies and AAC devices—often complements direct therapy.

History and terminology: The discipline emerged from concerns about speech and language disorders in the 19th and 20th centuries, with terminology that varies by region. Today logopedics remains a core component of multidisciplinary approaches to communication and swallowing disorders.
