Logopaedics, also known as speech-language pathology or speech therapy, is a health profession concerned with the assessment and treatment of communication and swallowing disorders. Logopaedists, the practitioners in this field, work with individuals of all ages, from infants to the elderly, who experience difficulties in understanding or producing speech, language, or cognitive-communication skills. These difficulties can arise from a variety of causes, including developmental delays, neurological conditions like stroke or traumatic brain injury, genetic syndromes, hearing loss, or structural abnormalities of the mouth and throat.

The scope of practice for a logopaedist is broad. They address issues such as articulation disorders (difficulty pronouncing sounds), language impairments (problems with understanding or using words and sentences), fluency disorders (such as stuttering), voice disorders (related to pitch, loudness, or quality of voice), and swallowing difficulties (dysphagia). Logopaedists also play a role in supporting individuals with communication challenges associated with conditions like autism spectrum disorder, cerebral palsy, and head and neck cancer.

Assessment typically involves a comprehensive evaluation using standardized tests, observations, and interviews to identify the nature and severity of the communication or swallowing problem. Following assessment, a logopaedist develops an individualized treatment plan. Therapy interventions are tailored to the specific needs of the client and may involve exercises, strategies, and assistive technology to improve speech clarity, language comprehension and expression, fluency, voice production, and safe swallowing. The ultimate goal is to enhance the individual's ability to communicate effectively and participate more fully in daily life.
