lockupclutch
Lockup clutch, or torque converter lockup clutch, is a mechanism used in many automatic transmissions to reduce or eliminate slip within the torque converter during steady cruising. It is typically housed within or adjacent to the torque converter and, when engaged, provides a mechanical connection between the engine and the transmission input, producing a direct drive ratio that improves efficiency.
Operation and control are generally based on vehicle speed, throttle position, engine load, and transmission temperature.
Benefits of the lockup clutch include improved fuel economy, reduced transmission and engine heat from fluid
Variants and prevalence vary by transmission design. Most traditional automatic transmissions feature a full or staged
