Lizyny is the plural form of lizyna in Polish, the amino acid known in English as lysine. Lysine is an essential amino acid for humans, meaning the body cannot synthesize it in sufficient quantities and it must be obtained from the diet.

Lysine plays several critical roles in biology. It is a key component of proteins, supporting growth and tissue repair. It also participates in the synthesis of enzymes, antibodies, and hormones, and contributes to collagen cross-linking, calcium absorption, and the production of carnitine, a molecule involved in fat metabolism. Because of its importance for growth and immune function, sufficient lysine is particularly essential in children and during pregnancy or recovery from illness.

Dietary sources and intake considerations. Rich sources of lysine include animal products such as meat, fish, dairy, and eggs, as well as plant foods like soy, beans, lentils, peas, quinoa, and certain seeds. Cereals are often relatively low in lysine, so combining cereals with legumes can improve the overall protein quality of a diet. The estimated daily requirement for adults is about 30 mg per kilogram of body weight, which translates to roughly 2–3 grams per day for many adults, depending on age, sex, and activity level.

Deficiency and health effects. Lysine deficiency is uncommon in developed countries but can occur in individuals with very low protein intake or restrictive diets. Deficiency may impair growth, immune function, and wound healing and can contribute to anemia or fatigue.

Production, use, and safety. Industrial lysine is produced by microbial fermentation and is widely used as a feed additive to improve animal growth and feed efficiency, and it is available as a dietary supplement for humans. In medical contexts, lysine has been explored for supporting herpes simplex virus management, though evidence remains mixed. Generally, lysine is safe at recommended intakes; excessive consumption can cause digestive upset and other adverse effects.
