Liukukytkin, known in English as a slip clutch, is a mechanical device placed between driving and driven shafts to limit transmitted torque by allowing controlled slip when overload occurs. It functions as a torque limiter and provides protection for motors, gears, and other drivetrain components.

Operation and types: Most liukukytkim are friction-based and use a set of friction surfaces pressed together by a spring or set of springs. Under normal load, the surfaces grip and transmit torque. When the torque demand exceeds a preset threshold, the surfaces begin to slip, keeping the output torque near the set limit rather than continuing to rise. The torque at which slip starts is adjustable by changing spring preload or the friction surface area. Common variants include disc (plate) slip clutches and cone slip clutches. Some systems may incorporate additional features such as temperature compensation or lubrication considerations to maintain consistent performance.

Applications: Liukukytkin are widely used in machinery where sudden overloads can occur or where a smooth engagement is desired. Typical applications include woodworking tools, conveyors, agricultural equipment, milling and grinding machines, printing presses, mixers, and certain automotive and power tool drivetrains. They are chosen to protect motors and gears from shock loads and to provide a controlled, gradual engagement rather than a hard coupling.

Design and maintenance: Selection involves considering the maximum continuous torque, the desired slip torque, operating speed, and environmental conditions. Regular inspection of friction surfaces for wear, proper lubrication, and verification of the adjustment setting are important for reliable performance. Worn or contaminated surfaces can alter the slip behavior and reduce protection.
