Lipohypertrophy is a medical condition characterized by the abnormal enlargement of fat tissue. It is typically a localized condition, meaning it affects specific areas of the body rather than being a generalized increase in body fat. This enlargement results from a buildup of adipocytes, or fat cells, in a particular region.

The most common cause of lipohypertrophy is repeated injections into the same subcutaneous site, a phenomenon often observed in individuals who manage chronic conditions requiring regular insulin or other injectable medications. The repeated trauma and inflammatory response from injections can lead to the tissue changes. However, it can also occur spontaneously or be associated with genetic factors, though these causes are less frequent.

Clinically, lipohypertrophy presents as soft, spongy lumps or pads of fat in the affected area. These lumps are generally painless and do not cause any functional impairment, although they can be a cosmetic concern for individuals. The skin overlying the lipohypertrophic area may appear normal or slightly dimpled.

Diagnosis is primarily based on a physical examination and a review of the patient's medical history, particularly regarding injection sites. Treatment focuses on preventing further development and improving the appearance of existing lumps. The most crucial management strategy is to rotate injection sites to avoid repeated trauma to the same area. In some cases, if the lipohypertrophy is significant or causing distress, medical professionals may consider surgical removal, though this is uncommon.
