Lipohüpertroofia refers to a condition characterized by abnormal growth and accumulation of fat tissue. This can occur in localized areas or more generally throughout the body. There are two main types: generalized lipohüpertroofia, which affects the entire body, and partial lipohüpertroofia, which is localized to specific regions.

Partial lipohüpertroofia is often associated with the injection of medications, particularly insulin and growth hormone, into the subcutaneous fat tissue. Repeated injections in the same site can lead to changes in the fat cells, resulting in either lumps of excess fat (lipohypertrophy) or indentations or depressions in the skin (lipoatrophy). These localized fat deposits are generally not painful and do not pose a significant health risk, although they can be a cosmetic concern.

Generalized lipohüpertroofia is a rarer condition that involves excessive fat accumulation throughout the body. It can be associated with certain genetic disorders and may have broader metabolic implications. Symptoms can include a disproportionate distribution of fat, often with a fuller trunk and upper body compared to the limbs.

Diagnosis of lipohüpertroofia is typically made through physical examination. In cases of partial lipohüpertroofia, a history of injections is a key indicator. Management strategies focus on preventing the condition, especially in individuals receiving injections, by rotating injection sites. For existing lipohüpertroofia, management may involve discontinuing the causative agent if possible or addressing any associated health concerns.
