limaskesta
Limaskesta is the Finnish term for the mucous membrane, the moist epithelial lining that covers many cavities and passages connecting to the exterior. In medical contexts it is commonly referred to simply as mucosa. A mucous membrane consists of an epithelial layer resting on a supporting lamina propria, and in some areas a thin layer of smooth muscle called the muscularis mucosae. The epithelium may be stratified or simple, and often contains goblet cells and mucous-producing glands that keep the surface lubricated and hydrated.
Functions of the limaskesta include forming a barrier against mechanical and microbial damage, supporting local immune
Regional variation is notable. The respiratory mucosa typically has pseudostratified ciliated columnar epithelium with goblet cells;
In clinical use, mucosal integrity is important in conditions such as rhinitis, gastritis, enteritis, and inflammatory
