Likinäkö, known medically as myopia, is a common refractive error of the eye where distant objects appear blurry while close objects remain clear. This occurs because the eye focuses images in front of the retina, rather than directly on it. The eyeball may be too long from front to back, or the cornea or lens may be too curved, causing light to bend too sharply.

The onset of likinäkö typically begins in childhood or adolescence and can progress over time. Factors contributing to its development include genetics, with a higher likelihood of developing likinäkö if one or both parents are myopic, and environmental influences. Extensive near work, such as reading and using digital devices for prolonged periods, is also suspected to play a role.

Symptoms of likinäkö can include squinting to see distant objects, frequent headaches, eye strain, and fatigue, especially after reading or computer work. It is often diagnosed through a routine eye examination by an optometrist or ophthalmologist.

Likinäkö can be corrected using eyeglasses, contact lenses, or refractive surgery. Eyeglasses and contact lenses work by altering the path of light before it enters the eye, shifting the focal point back onto the retina. Refractive surgeries, such as LASIK and PRK, permanently change the shape of the cornea to correct the refractive error.
